Baby Shower cake

A new baby is so exciting especially when it is your first!  I still get a little emotional when I go to baby showers of expectant new mums.  It is such an amazing time of life and I will never forget all those little firsts.  I had so much fun making this baby shower cake this weekend, especially the yummy little feet.  The cake is a caramel mud cake with a chocolate ganache, covered in fondant.

1939 Chev Coupe

It's been a rough week.  Two sick kids, very little sleep and husband working long hours.  Weeks where you kind of need a break from motherhood for a couple days. There was one highlight though.  This 1939 chev coupe cake.  I've said it before, I love making car cakes!  As a kid my dad would take us to a car museum.  I remember walking around looking at the old hot rods and admiring them, thinking one day I might have one.  I may not get a hot rod, but at least I can make them with cake!  Happy Birthday Bruce!  I hope this car cake brought back great memories for you too!

30th birthday cake

This week I made a cake for an incredibly lovely ladies 30th birthday.  She is gluten free and dairy free so I will admit that this was a bit daunting for me.  I have been a bit wary about approaching cakes for people with allergies as I would hate to be the one to make them sick!  I think I double checked the ingredients a thousand times and pre-washed everything before I used it.  When I tasted a test cupcake from the cake batch I made, I was really disappointed.  It was gummy and didn't really taste all that well. The taste of the cake is more important to me than the decorating so I wanted to get this right! I offered another cake in addition to eat but she said that it was normal for gluten free to taste that way so I proceeded. When I went to cut off the top of the cake (unfortunately I had to cut a bit off) I was pleasantly surprised!  The cupcakes didn't work out but this was a moist mud cake! I was so pleased that it had worked out.  Happy Birthday Amy!!

Kindy Easter Cake

I thought I would share with you a cake that I made with my daughters kindy last week for Easter.  I brought in three iced round 6" cakes as well as all of the decorations pre-made.  All of the kids split into groups of 7 and each group iced a cake.  One group put the dirt and vegetables on the cake, another put dirt (crumbed up cake) and flowers on the cake and the last group put the bunny, his house and the bridges on the cake.  I loved talking with the kids and getting to know who my daughter spends time with when she is at school.

Cupcake night

This week I had some of my favorite ladies over for a cupcake evening.  Eight girls from my life group learned to make five different cupcakes and they did fantastic!  It was such a fun night, especially doing something together.  So often as ladies we just get together to chat over coffee but it is actually quite rewarding to do something together, whatever it might be: making cupcakes, bike riding, running a triathlon together.  I kind of get how guys socialize.  You come away feeling energized and accomplished.  Here are some photos of the night.

Black and white

My sister in law came down this weekend and as her birthday falls in a couple of weeks and my father in laws birthday was a couple of weeks ago we celebrated their birthday together last night.  Initially I had grand plans of making a boat cake with the two of them tubing out the back as this is what we love to do as a family but they decided they wanted me enjoying the boat with them out on the lake rather than making their cake at home.  I couldn't really argue with this as the weather has been supreme this week and it was a brilliant day enjoying the water.  I had a ton of black icing for the boat cake that needed to be used so this is the cake I made for them instead.  I tried to make it both masculine and feminine at the same time.  I probably spent an hour trying to decide what to do!  The change of plans left me with cake block a little.  Overall I am pleased with the results though.

Easter biscuits

This morning I took my kids to the last Mainly Music of the school term.  My husband had to work late last night so I spent the evening making these Easter biscuits to take with me for the shared morning tea.  They were so much fun to make!

Grandmas tea set

I thought I would share a pretty neat story with you regarding the tea set cake I did for my Grandma a few weeks back.  Last year was a year of many changes.  Many of my friends left to go overseas or went back to full time work leaving me somewhat alone.  On top of that I had a baby who needed routine so I found myself stuck to a pretty strict schedule which left me limited on the number of activities I could do to get to know other women.  During this time I took the opportunity to get to know my Grandma and spent many hours chatting over tea with her.  I never knew my Grandma growing up so this time to connect with her was really quite special to me.  I loved our talks and she became more of a dear friend to me than a Grandma.  I have found it quite hard since she has become sick but I consider the time I have spent to get to know her such a blessing! Her cake was therefore an incredibly special cake for me.

She looks lovely in purple so I knew I wanted to do a tea set with purple flowers and gold trim.  I also didn't want a fancy flower but a simple beautiful one which is why I chose violets.  At the party everyone was convinced I had copied Grandmas tea set, but I have never even seen it!  Imagine how special it was for both of us that the tea set I made for her and her special tea set at home were very similar.  Some might say it is a coincidence but I don't think so.  I think that maybe God had his hand in it somewhere and it will always be an amazing memory for me.
