Surprise Eggs

I've been crazy busy lately with cakes so it has been nice to have a week off.  My husband thought I was crazy putting my apron on and going into the kitchen to tackle a project on my weekend off, but it was just what I needed! I felt like a little kid undergoing this and the results were pretty cool if I do say so myself.  I will probably never do this again due to the time factor but it was fun and definitely worth a try if you are game!  The pictures really explain it all.

I used a chocolate cupcake recipe and filled the eggs 2/3 full but really should only have filled 1/2 as you can see from the pictures.  Once the cupcakes were baked I inserted icing into the cake and filled them, just like a creme egg! Fun!

Football!

This cake was made this past weekend for a football fans 21st.  The cake is a jersey replica of his favourite team.  It is a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing. I am sure my brother would love this one!

Cake disasters happen to me too!

I thought I would share my cake disaster with you!  This is what happens when a 15 month old plays with the dials on the oven.  I didn't realise until the timer went off that the oven temperature was sitting at 300 degrees Celsius.  And yes it did smell burnt, but I thought maybe I had gotten batter on the sides of the tin that was burning.  Lesson learnt: don't bake before kids have gone to bed for the night.

Unicorn Cake

I loved this cake!  I am pretty sure if I had this cake as a kid I would have gone nuts!  It is a rainbow layer cake on the inside.

Grandmas cake

This cake is a very special cake this week.  My Grandma turned 78 and to celebrate her we had a big party with all the family.  She is a pretty special lady my Grandma and very dear to me and to alot of people.  The last year I have spent many afternoons chatting over a 'cuppa' with her.  I don't know how much time we have left with her as she has been diagnosed recently with cancer but I do know that I feel incredibly blessed to have gotten to know this amazing woman who has inspired me to be a better woman, to love more, to learn more, to laugh more, to drink more cups of tea with friends.

Ocean cakes

This weekend I had two cakes for two pretty awesome people.  The first one is for a very close friend of my husbands.  He has known this guy for years.  They practically grew up together and he was the best man in our wedding.  An avid fisherman, it was only fitting that I make this fishing boat cake for him.

The next cake was for a very special girl who has been an immense help to me with my kids.  She is a delight to be around, always cheerful and full of life and she is fantastic with my kids.  We spend a lot of time out on our boat with her and her family and she spends much of the time chasing around my two tots which gives me plenty of time to enjoy the boat.  She is also a future cake maker and can't wait to see her future creations!  She has a huge head start on me!

Purple Hearts

This week has been a week of purple and hearts!  I had two wedding cakes and both brides wanted purple with hearts incorporated into the cake.  One wanted a more 'rustic' look and the other wanted a more fresh look to her cake.  The 'rustic' cake was a chocolate mud cake for the base, strawberry mud cake for the centre and white chocolate mud cake for the top.  The cake was covered in buttercream icing.  The smaller cake is a white chocolate mud cake covered in chocolate ganache and fondant with mini chocolate mud cupcakes and mini strawberry mud cupcakes.
